Feb 10, 2016 / Brooklyn, NY — Newspeak and Exapno New Music Community Center are proud to announce the lineup for the 2016 New Music Bake Sale. Now in its seventh year, the annual New Music Bake Sale is a collective fundraising and social event aimed at supporting and showcasing the new music community of New York City. The event features a marathon day of performances by a diverse variety of new music ensembles and soloists (performer bios below), while organizations and ensembles represent themselves at tables throughout the space to sell food items and promote their artistic endeavors. All proceeds from sales at individual tables remain with the participants.
The event will take place on Sunday, March 13 at Roulette (509 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn) from 4:00pm to 10:00pm. The cost of admission is $10 (paid at the door) for the full 6-hour event.
This year’s lineup of ensembles and soloists was selected through a submission process and, as always, is intended to showcase the breadth and variety of New York’s new music community. Each performer will play a 20-minute set on the hour. The schedule is as follows:

About the Artists
The Resonant Bodies Festival—“in equal measures intelligent, playful, ambitious and moving” (New York Times)—is an annual festival of contemporary vocal music that presents nine dynamic vocalists across three nights. The festival showcases “today’s most talented singers… seamlessly blend[ing] classical, avant-garde and indie-folk” (Feast of Music). Vocalists are invited to curate and perform in their own 45-minute set, with no restrictions on repertoire, format, or style. This freedom gives each show a “happy zealousness, where the singers’ enthusiasm for their repertoire [is] contagious” (Sequenza 21).The “indispensable” and “essential” Festival (New York Times), founded in 2013, has already made an important contribution to the new music scene and is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear virtuosic contemporary music vocalists perform cutting-edge repertoire in New York City. Future seasons will expand the festival to new cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Melbourne, Australia. resonantbodiesfestival.org
Kimura/Lytle/Supové Trio
Mari Kimura is at the forefront of violinists who are extending the technical and expressive capabilities of the instrument. As a performer, composer, and researcher, she has opened up new sonic worlds for the violin. Notably, she has mastered the production of pitches that sound up to an octave below the violin’s lowest string without retuning. This technique, which she calls Subharmonics, has earned Mari considerable renown in the concert music world and beyond. She is also a pioneer in the field of interactive computer music. At the same time, she has earned international acclaim as a soloist and recitalist in both standard and contemporary repertoire. marikimura.com
Michael Lytle (composer and performer) has a Master’s in Composition (electronic music) from the U. of Iowa and has been playing clarinet for 50 years. Well known as an improviser and called the “most radical of his generation” by Joachim Berendt, he invented a set of clarinet sonic modulation and performance born of not having access to an electronic music studio for a long period. He has collaborated with Will Parsons, Jon English, George Cartwright, David Moss, Karl Berger, Hans Burgener, Mark Howell, Nick Didkovsky, and Gerry Hemingway, to name a few, and has made over 30 recordings. soundcloud.com/michael-elewhale-lytle
Kathleen Supové is one of America’s most acclaimed and versatile contemporary music pianists, known for continually redefining what a pianist/keyboardist/performance artist is in today’s world. Ms. Supové annually presents a series of solo concerts entitled The Exploding Piano. In this series, she has performed and premiered works by a list of established and emerging composers that’s a who’s who of contemporary music for piano. She has developed The Exploding Piano into a multimedia experience by using electronics, theatrical elements, vocal rants, performance art, staging, and collaboration with artists from other disciplines. Anthony Tommasini (New York Times) says: “what Ms. Supové is really exploding is the piano recital as we have known it, a mission more radical and arguably more needed.” In May, 2012, Supové received the John Cage Award from ASCAP for “the artistry and passion with which she performs, commissions, records, and champions the music of our time.” supove.com
As RighteousGIRLS, New York-based flutist Gina Izzo and pianist Erika Dohi “rattle speakers and expectations with stop-time razzle, vocal (flute-talk) and electronic (phaser) effects” (NYC Jazz Record) while continually expanding their creative reach by bringing 21st century music to new audiences and commissioning works that root themselves in classical idioms but draw from other genres.
RighteousGIRLS have performed at venues and festivals such as Vicky Chow’s “Contagious Sound Series” at the Cornelia Street Café, SubCulture, the DC Jazz Festival, the Jazz Gallery, the Yamaha Piano Salon, An Die Musik, Bohemian Caverns, The ArtsCenter, Rockwood Music Hall Stage III, the Atlas Performing Arts Center, and Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater. In July 2015, RighteousGIRLS released their debut album gathering blue (New Focus Recordings) featuring compositions by contemporary/classical and jazz artists including Andy Akiho, Ambrose Akinmusire, Pascal Le Boeuf, Christian Carey, Vijay Iyer, Dave Molk, Mike Perdue, Jonathan Ragonese, and Randy Woolf. “The whole of gathering blue, featuring compositions by Vijay Iyer, Ambrose Akinmusire, and others, displays the same enthralling quick-change artistry. Founded in 2010, the Lunar Ensemble is a top contemporary music ensemble in the Mid-Atlantic region that aims to effectively engage and challenge audiences through creative programming and inspiring performances. Equipped with an ensemble based around the “Pierrot-plus” instrumentation (flutes, clarinets, violin/viola, cello, piano, percussion, two sopranos, and conductor), this versatile group of professional musicians has premiered nearly 40 works since 2011. The Lunar Ensemble actively promotes and cultivates the careers of emerging composers, not only through performance, but also through short and long-term residencies. For the 2015-16 season, the Lunar Ensemble has been named the Ensemble-in-Residence for the Baltimore War Memorial Arts Initiative, in the heart of Baltimore MD. lunarensemble.com
Threefifty, made up of Brooklyn-based guitarists Brett Parnell and Geremy Schulick, compose predominantly instrumental songs, which range from the epic to the intricate to the austerely beautiful. Incorporating elements of post-rock, folk, minimalism, and Baroque classicism—augmented by drums, bass, violin, mandolin, electronics and ambient vocals—the band casts a spell that’s propulsive, hypnotic and haunting. Threefifty was recently featured on WNYC’s Soundcheck with John Schaefer, who described their music as “expansive yet delicate… recalls the sprawling and ruminative landscapes of Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai” as well as in Guitar Player Magazine (“Outstanding guitar work… intelligent, deep and subtle”). Performance highlights include BAM’s Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival and BAMcafé Live series, TEDx Carnegie Mellon University, The New York Guitar Festival, The Englert, and multiple tours of the UK, Austria and Bosnia. Threefifty is proud to be a part of the D’Addario artist family. threefiftyduo.com
