About the Artists
NEWSPEAK is an amplified ensemble that became an early standout within New York’s “indie-classical” scene. Working under the direction of composer David T. Little and clarinetist Eileen Mack, Newspeak has been featured as part of the of the 25th Anniversary Bang on a Can Marathon, the Tune-In Festival with eighth blackbird at the Park Avenue Armory, the Ecstatic Music Festival, on WNYC’s New Sounds Live, at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, and as part of the inaugural PROTOTYPE Festival. The group has headlined on the MATA Festival, shared bills with The Fiery Furnaces as part of Wordless Music, and performed as part of John Zorn’s Full Force festival. A founding co-presenter of the New Music Bake Sale, Newspeak released their first CD on New Amsterdam Records in 2010. Their second CD—Soldier Songs—was just released on Innova Recordings. www.newspeakmusic.org
Hailed by The New York Times as “a versatile, charismatic soprano endowed with brilliant technique and superlative stage instincts…indispensable to New York’s new-music ecosystem,” Mellissa Hughes enjoys a busy career in both contemporary and early music. A dedicated interpreter of living composers, Ms. Hughes has worked closely with Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon, David Lang, Steve Reich, Neil Rolnick, and has premiered works by Caleb Burhans, David T. Little, Missy Mazzoli, Ted Hearne, Jacob Cooper, Matt Marks, and Frederic Rzewski. mellissahughes.com
Exapno is a new music community center. It’s a place where musicians come to compose, rehearse and perform for the monthly price of a gym membership. In a city where renting rehearsal space can be prohibitively expensive and isolating, Exapno creates a cheaper, more inviting option. Though composing is generally seen as a lonely pursuit, Exapno fosters a community of composers working side by side in a supportive work environment. Exapno is a co-presenter of the New Music Bake Sale. exapno.org
Based in New York City, Iktus Percussion is an ambitious, dynamic young ensemble committed to expanding the boundaries of the percussion genre. Iktus is a collective-based operation, featuring an array of industrious and multi-talented percussionists with Chris Graham, Justin Wolf, Steve Sehman, Nick Woodbury, and Cory Bracken at the core. As a group with strong ties to the local artistic community, Iktus is dedicated to collaboration with emerging artists, having commissioned over fifty new works for percussion from such composers as Angélica Negrón, Aaron Siegel, Lisa R. Coons, Jenny Olivia Johnson, Stefan Weisman, and Billy Martin (of Medeski, Martin and Wood), among others. iktuspercussion.com
West Fourth New Music Collective is a composers’ collective engaged in creating and presenting new works and committed to exploring the relevance of live music to our changing modern world. Based in Brooklyn and co-directed by Tim Hansen, Molly Herron, Matt Frey, and Ruben Naeff, West Fourth promotes the work of new music and its makers. w4newmusic.com
ensemble, et al. is a Brooklyn-based percussion group that employs elements of contemporary chamber music with a “garage band” approach to composition. The group performs original compositions and collaborations by its members Ron Tucker, Charles Kessenich, J. Ross Marshall, and Jeff Eng. I Care If You Listen writes of ensemble, et al.: “the resonant, tonal palette of chimes, bells, and percussive ringing instruments effectively drums across the tight wire between post-punk textures, airport spaces, and the endless grass fields of the mind.” The group’s 2011 EP, When the Tape Runs Out, was chosen as an Editor’s Pick on eMusic. ensembleetal.com
Flutist Claire Chase, a 2012 MacArthur Fellow, is a soloist, collaborative artist, and arts entrepreneur. Over the past decade Claire has given the world premieres of over 100 new works for flute, many of them tailor-made for her. Praised for her “extravagant technique, broad stylistic range and penetrating musicality” by the New York Times, Chase has given critically acclaimed solo recitals recently at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center. Highlights of the current season include solo performances at the Guangzhou Triennial (Guangzhou, China), Museu Pinacoteca (São Paolo, Brazil), debuts in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and the release of her second solo album, Terrestre. Chase was First Prize Winner in the 2008 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and has performed as a soloist throughout the US, Europe, Latin America and Asia. She co-founded the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) in 2001 and serves as the organization’s Artistic Director and CEO. www.clairechase.net
Timothy (Timo) Andres is a Brooklyn-based composer and pianist. His debut album, Shy and Mighty, was released by Nonesuch Records in May 2010 to immediate critical acclaim. Alex Ross wrote in The New Yorker that Shy and Mighty “achieves an unhurried grandeur that has rarely been felt in American music since John Adams came on the scene… more mighty than shy, [Andres] sounds like himself.” Recent highlights for Andres include a new work for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, chamber works performed by the groundbreaking ensembles wild Up and eighth blackbird, and solo recitals at (Le) Poisson Rouge and Wigmore Hall. andres.com
With its unique combination of flute, violin, cello, and percussion, Cadillac Moon Ensemble is dedicated to retaining the intimacy and artistry of traditional chamber music, while expanding its palette of sonic possibilities. Described as a “commission-crazed young group” (Time Out NY) “with excellent ensemble awareness and phrasing” (The Examiner), CME has commissioned and premiered over fifty works to date and strives to strongly connect with audiences, and communicate new repertoire through varied, diverse programming. Atlas, CME’s newly released debut album under New Dynamic Records, has been described as “an auspicious collection of new compositions by contemporary composers that combines the fun and wit of rock and film music with the intensity and challenging sonics that have come to define the best of the New York indie classical scene” by Lucid Culture and “a well-packaged, well-performed, and well-recorded presentation of several up-and-coming composers” by I Care If You Listen. cadillacmoonensemble.com
Guardian Alien is a free wheeling ensemble coming into its own, having found just the right balance between structured arrangements and wild abandon. Helmed by Greg Fox, who has lent his percussive force to the likes of Teeth Mountain, Dan Deacon, and Liturgy, the ensemble was initially an extension of his solo music (GDFX). It rapidly took on its own identity and expanded to a core group of Greg (drums, vocals, electronics, arrangements), Alex Drewchin (vocals, synth), Turner Williams Jr. (shahai baaja), Bernard Gann (guitar), and Eli Winograd (bass), all of whom have lent their expansive talents to numerous other projects. guardianalien.tumblr.com
ZS is a band and a genre. ZS is concerned with creating music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of performer and listener equally. ZS has toured extensively in North America and Europe, and has recently begun visiting Asia. On September 11th, 2012, ZS released SCORE – the complete sextet works 2002 – 2007, a four-CD box set. SCORE will be followed by the GRAIN EP in early 2013 and Xe, an LP due out in late 2013. These releases will be accompanied by extensive touring!
